EPIC LI and Dr. Ettinger Partner with Music for Autism

Dr. Alan B. Ettinger, MD, MBA, FAAN, FAES is a nationally recognized Epilepsy and Seizure Specialist whose career has been defined by advancing care for individuals living with seizures and related neurological disorders. A former Professor of Clinical Neurology and dedicated researcher, Dr. Ettinger, has spent decades focused on improving the quality of life for people affected by epilepsy, many of whom are also part of the autism community.

In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Ettinger is the scientific director and saxophonist of Synaptic Groove Band, a Long Island-based group that blends performance and education to showcase the therapeutic benefits of music. Dr. Ettinger says that based upon what he has learned from his own research and that of many others, the potential powerful effects of music have not been well-recognized by the clinical and lay public alike. Synaptic Groove Band performances he says, “are dedicated to teaching clinicians and the public how music can be invaluable for a diversity of conditions”.This spring, Dr. Ettinger and Synaptic Groove will partner with Music for Autism to present an in-person concert at the Brooklyn Heights Library designed for individuals with autism and their families. Music for Autism concerts are free, sensory-friendly events that allow people of all abilities to engage with live music in a safe, welcoming space.Music for Autism offers free, autism-friendly concerts featuring top artists. Concerts and programs are designed for individuals with autism and their families. These inclusive events provide joyful and enriching experiences that foster community and togetherness through the power of music.Emerging research continues to shed light on the complex relationship between neurological conditions, particularly epilepsy and autism. For example, a sizable number of individuals with autism may also experience epilepsy.EPIC Family of Human Service Agencies is the parent organization of EPIC Long Island, the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island, and South Shore Guidance Center— working together to provide comprehensive, person-centered support for individuals with epilepsy, developmental disabilities, and mental health challenges across Long Island.
