Sohar University students develop smart bracelet for detection of epileptic seizures
Two students – Aisha Al Omaria and Lamia Al Saadiya – from Sohar University, have developed a smart bracelet for detection of epileptic seizures. The bracelet is designed to assist patients in receiving prompt medical aid during severe epileptic episodes.Aisha Salim al Omaria explained that the bracelet utilizes wearable IoT technology to detect epileptic seizures by monitoring two key indicators: muscle electrical activity and heart rate. Upon detecting a seizure, it promptly sends wireless alerts to caregivers via phone calls, text messages, and audible alerts.Additionally, an accompanying mobile application allows for the monitoring of vital signs and seizure occurrences. The development of the smart bracelet involved thorough planning, research, and analysis of market needs and available technologies. This was followed by design and development phases, including the creation of electronic components, software, and applications necessary for seizure detection.Subsequently, the bracelet underwent rigorous testing on a selected group of patients to ensure its effectiveness and accuracy.Upon successful testing, the bracelet proceeded to mass production, marketing, and distribution stages. Post-sales support is also provided, including technical assistance, maintenance, and product updates based on user feedback and technological advancements.Aisha said that the primary objective of the smart bracelet is to enhance the quality of life for epilepsy patients by accurately monitoring seizures and facilitating timely assistance. Moreover, it aims to raise awareness about epilepsy and proper patient care.Lamia elaborated on the bracelet’s functionalities, components, and potential future developments. The device comprises an EMG measuring device, a heart rate sensor, internet connectivity, and tracking capabilities, alongside other electronic components. The accompanying smartphone application features separate sections for doctors and patients, providing medical and therapeutic information.Lamia mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance the bracelet’s accuracy through sensor technology improvements and to expand the application’s features and usability. Furthermore, plans include broadening clinical trials to validate the device’s efficiency comprehensively. Source: muscatdaily.com
