‘My hero’: Toddler saves mother’s life after she collapses from seizure
A mother says her 3-year-old son saved her life after she suffered a seizure and collapsed.
PONTIAC, Mich. - A Michigan mother says her 3-year-old son saved her life after she suffered a seizure and collapsed when they were home alone.
For Shantell Woods, who was recently diagnosed with epilepsy, seizures are a part of life. While cooking at home Thursday afternoon, she got dizzy and sat on her coach. She then had a seizure and fell unconscious with no one around expect her 3-year-old son, Cody.
“I want to cry right now. He’s just my hero,” Woods said. “He’s just a smart kid. I’m proud.”
While his mother was unconscious, Cody grabbed her phone and held it up close to her face to unlock it. He then called Kaya, a family friend and neighbor, using FaceTime.
“I realized something wasn’t right, so something told me to just hurry, jump up and come across the parking lot,” Kaya said.
A panicked Kaya called 911, getting Woods the medical attention she needed.
Initially, Kaya thought the FaceTime call came from Woods before she lost consciousness, but she later learned it had been Cody.
“I was surprised but happy he knew what to do in that moment,” she said.
Woods says over the last couple of months, she has had more than 20 seizures. Cody has witnessed his mother’s medical episodes before, which helped him know what to do during the emergency.
While Cody doesn’t turn 4 until next month, the community has already started celebrating the young hero, with some people promising him free ice cream for the rest of the year.
Woods has set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses following her epilepsy diagnosis.
